Biographical / Historical

The John C. Green Foundation was created in 1875 with the passing of John Cleve Green. In his will, he left his residuary estate to his widow, Sarah Griswold Green; his younger brother, Caleb Smith Green, Jr.; his nephew, Charles E. Green; and his friend, Judge John T. Nixon. Together, these four persons became known as the "Founders." The group purchased The Lawrenceville School from Dr. Hamill in 1879 with the intention of turning it into an entirely new school "with a more elite student body" ("The Lawrentian," Winter 2017). The male "Founders" were among the first trustees of the School. Under the Foundation, many changes were enacted, including construction of new buildings around the Circle; the introduction of the House system; and the use of English-style forms.
