Biographical / Historical

The Lawrenceville School has a rich musical tradition which includes the Lawrenceville Glee Club. The Glee Club began in 1894 under the musical direction of Francis Trench. Tench composed some of the best-loved School songs, including "Sons of Lawrence," "In Olden Days," and "On the Esplanade." In 1896 oversaw publication of The Lawrenceville School Song Book. Trench's successor, Howard Row Wood, edited a revised edition of the song book in 1914.

The Songs for Coffee books were primarily used at weekly sing-alongs over coffee at Foundation House. These meetings began in the 1940s and ended in the 1960s.
