Biographical / Historical

The New Jersey Scholars Program began in 1977 when the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation awarded a grant to The Lawrenceville School to establish an intensive academic summer program for exceptional high school juniors. According to a press release issued by The Lawrenceville School announcing the program, the stated purpose was: " identify students of special ability, to give them a broadening summer academic experience, and to provide a follow-up program during their senior year in high school. A secondary goal [was] to recognize the selected students for their individual accomplishments."

The early curricula focused on interdisciplinary studies combining classics, language, history, literature, and science. The programs continues today following a similar rubric. Much like in the early days of the program, all scholars are New Jersey residents and are selected from high schools all across the state. Scholars travel to The Lawrenceville School to live and study on campus during the duration of the program. The faculty is comprised of both Lawrenceville School and college faculty.
