Scope and Contents

The collection contains materials created and/or used by the Deans of Faculty, including faculty personnel records; committee materials; reports; and information pertaining to academic, faculty, and housemaster matters. The bulk of the collection consists of faculty personnel records spanning roughly a century.

Conditions Governing Access

Unpublished material contained in personnel files of individual members of the faculty will be closed until 100 years until after the person’s year of birth or 5 years after the person’s year of death, whichever is longer. Exceptions may be made only with the prior approval of the Dean of the Faculty.

The remainder of the collection is open for research use.

Conditions Governing Use

Single photocopies and digital photographs may be made for research purposes. Permission to publish materials from the collection must be requested from the Archivist. Researchers are responsible for determining any other copyright questions.

Biographical / Historical

The position of Dean of Faculty brings with it oversight of all faculty personnel issues and shares with the Dean of Academics responsibility for curriculum design, development, and implementation. The Dean of Faculty is also responsible for faculty housing on campus and managing the Housemasters and House assistants. The Dean serves on various campus committees.

Deans of Faculty have included Frederick J.V. Hancock (early 1900s); Jack Chivers (1960-1966); Benjamin Franklin Briggs (1966-1981); W. Graham Cole, Jr. (1981-1993); Eileen P. Mullady (1993-1995); Catherine Boczkowski (1995-2005); Kevin Mattingly (2005-2012); and Chris Cunningham (2012-present).

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The majority of the records in this collection were transferred from the Office of the Dean of Faculty to the Stephan Archives. Other materials were given to the Archives by Catherine Boczkowski.


Appraisal has been conducted in accordance with The Lawrenceville School Stephan Archives guidelines.
