Biographical / Historical

Philip H. Jordan, Jr., served as interim headmaster for the 1995-1996 year. He graduated from Lawrenceville in 1950 and was the first alumnus to head the school. During his time at Lawrenceville, Jordan was a member of the Dawes and Lodge Houses; and participated in several student organizations, including Periwig and the literary publication The Pipe and Quill.

Jordan received a BA in Philosophy from Princeton in 1954. He went on to study at Yale, receiving his MA in 1956 and his Ph.D. in 1962. He worked at Connecticut College for a time as a History professor and the Dean of Faculty. Before returning to Lawrenceville, Jordan was the President at Kenyon College for twenty years.

Jordan and his wife, Sheila, had two sons who both attended Lawrenceville: Philip H. Jordan III (L. 1985) and John G. Jordan II (L. 1990).


The correspondences in the collection are arranged chronologically within a series. The remaining materials are arranged alphabetically.
