Biographical / Historical

A meeting of the Lawrenceville Garden Club was first convened at the Mrs. Oscar H. McPherson on April 24, 1928. At the time of its founding, the stated purpose of the club was to hold informal discussions of problems of home gardening, talks by experienced practical gardeners, and visits to gardens of interest in the vicinity, in addition to day excursions to more distant estates. Over time, the stated purpose of the club became, "to stimulate an intelligent and enthusiastic interest in gardening, to help in the preservation of our natural environment and to study the practical and aesthetic uses of gardening, landscaping design, and flower arranging." Throughout its history, the Club's membership has consisted largely of spouses of The Lawrenceville School faculty and administration. The Lawrenceville Garden Club has participated in numerous local flower shows throughout the years. The Club has also advised local businesses, churches, and homes on landscaping and shrubbery arrangement. A member of The Garden Club of New Jersey and the National Council of State Garden Clubs, the Lawrenceville Garden Club is still active today.
