Biography

Samuel McClintock Hamill was born in 1812 in Norristown, PA, to Robert (b. 1759, d. 1838) and Isabella (b. 1784, d. 1850) Hamill. He married Matilda M. Green Hamill (b.1818, d.1903) in 1838. Their children together include: Mary Green Hamill (b.1840, d. 1926); Isabella Todd Hamill (b. 1840, d.1846); Robert M. Hamill (b.1842, d. 1861); Samuel McClintock Hamill (b.1845, d. 1848) Charles Dickinson Hamill (b.1848, d.1866); Richard Green Hamill (b. 1850, d. 1851 or 1854); Samuel McClintock Hamill, Jr., Esq. (b.1858, d. 1907); Matilda (aka Maude) Augusta Hamill (b. 1855, d. 1889)

Hamill prepared for college with Rev. Dr. George Jenkins at Germantown and Easton, PA, then attended and graduated from Jefferson College, in 1834. He was licensed to the ministry of the Presbyterian Church by the Second Presbytery of Philadelphia and ordained in 1853 Presbytery of New Brunswick, NJ. Hamill became an instructor of Latin and Greek at the high school in Lawrenceville, NJ and a few years later became the principal. Hamill purchased the school from Alexander Hamilton Phillips in 1837 and renamed it the Lawrenceville Classical and Commercial High School. His brother Hugh was briefly co-Principal with Samuel, but then Samuel became the sole Head of School, and longest serving one in the school's history. He sold the school to the residuary legatees of the estate of John Cleve Green in 1879, but remained on as the principal until Dr. McKenzie took over the School. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of Princeton Theological Seminary, President of the New Jersey Historical Society, and one of the managers of the State Asylum for the Insane in Trenton, NJ. His home was engulfed by a fire in 1887, and in 1889, he died at the age of 77 years.
