Biography

Hugh Henderson Hamill graduated from the Lawrenceville School in 1868. He received a B.A. from Princeton University in 1871, studied law with Caleb S. Green, a cousin, and in 1877 was admitted to the NJ Bar and 1888 was admitted as a counselor. Hugh Henderson Hamill held many roles at the Lawrenceville Classical and Commercial High School, including Superintendent of Grounds and Buildings, Instructor, Vice-Principal, and Trustee. He practiced law until 1890 when he was named President of the Trenton Trust and Safe Deposit Company, and he held this role until his death in 1909. He was also President of the Real Estate Title Company. Hugh Henderson Hamill married Elizabeth Drinker Gummere in 1879, and they had four children together: Barker Gummere Hamill (b. 1880, d. 1937), (married Page Aylett Royall in 1910); Matilda (aka Mathilde) Margareta Green Hamill (b. 1883, d. 1982), (married Bruce Bedford); Hugh Henderson Hamill, Jr. (b. 1885, d. 1947); and Samuel McClintock Hamill (b.1888, d. 1889).

Scope and Contents From the Collection:

The collection consists of photographs and negatives of the school when it was known as the Lawrenceveille Classical & Commercial High School. There are photographs of the Class of 1874, Class of 1882, and Class of 1883. In addition, there are early prints from lithographs depicting Hamill House and Haskell House and a sample diploma from 1879.
